Mohawk names digital print lab in honour of long-time college supporter (media release)

Mohawk honoured Hugh Cameron for his support of the college’s digital print lab for students. No other college in Canada has equipment and technology equal to what Graphic Design students use in the Hugh Cameron Digital Print Learning Centre.

HAMILTON (Nov. 11, 2015) –  A long-time supporter of Mohawk students was recognized today for his leadership in building  the most advanced digital printing lab at any college in Canada.

Mohawk’s Digital Print Learning Centre was named in honour of Hugh Cameron, Chairman of Retail Ready Packages Inc. and President of the International Corrugated Packaging Foundation of Canada. Cameron has secured more than $750,000 worth of equipment and funding for student scholarships and bursaries. The Hugh Cameron Digital Print Learning Centre includes a Kongsberg XL22 sample making table, a Roland 64-inch large format press, a Xerox 800 digital colour press, UV coater and die cutter.

More than 200 students in Mohawk’s three-year Advanced Diploma Graphic Design program train at the Hugh Cameron Digital Print Learning Centre where they learn how to turn digital designs into finished products and packaging.

FAST FACTS:

  • Hugh Cameron began his career in the packaging industry in 1951, working for companies including Belkin Packaging, Ace Containers Limited, Crown Zellerbach and Bathurst Containers before launching his own business in 1968.
  • Mohawk’s Digital Print Learning Centre officially opened in February 2012 with support from Xerox Canada, Bell Howell, Esko Graphics and the International Corrugated Packaging Foundation of Canada.
  • Students train on specialized technology, including digital printing presses, a Kongsberg sample making table and Duplo finishing equipment to turn their digital designs into finished products, including business cards, saddle stitched and perfect bound books, pads, posters, banners, clothing and a wide variety of other specialized print and packaging design products.
